Organic Pesticides Challenge

Using organic pesticides instead of the conventional variety will greatly improve your family's health. These products are deadly toxins and should be eliminated immediately from your home.

Basically most of the pests we see in our homes are of the same insect group. So you will really just need one absolutely safe product. Read on...

*Some bugs are beneficial and help you by preying on other pests. I always leave spiders alone, they eat a variety of other less desirable pests.

Organic Flea Control

There's only one organic pesticide, that's specific for insects and completely safe.

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) is a type of fossilized algae that resembles talcum powder.

The fine, sharp-edged particles attach and penetrate the waxy coating on a flea's shell-like exoskeleton, leaving the little vampires to dehydrate and die.

Sprinkle lightly on the carpet, allow to sit for at least 30 minutes, then vacuum. Regular vacuuming goes a long way in ridding your home of fleas as well.

DE can be safely applied as an organic topical dust to your pet.

Brewer's yeast can also be dusted on externally as an organic flea powder.

If your pet licks some off, there's no harm done. Another reason organic pesticides are the only way to go!

*Always use any products sparingly, you save money.

Tammi's Tidbits: To loosen dirt and kill flea and moth eggs in your carpet, sprinkle with salt, work it into the nap with a stiff broom, then vacuum it up.

Light Traps

This simple trick is a great way to not only kill fleas, but to monitor your results of the DE and other treatments.

Just a little lamp (desk style works well) next to a plate of soapy water.

Fleas are part of an insect family that are drawn to light. They're just that way.

Fleas drown easily provided you disable their mechanism to deal with water (that's what the soap does).

COOL! Take The Organic Pesticides Challenge and have some scientific fun for yourself!

Set the trap out at night and check it in the morning. Count the number of dead fleas.

This is the best way to measure how your DE efforts are working.

If you are doing a good job you will see less and less fleas.

Continue monitoring for four weeks beyond the sight of the last adult. Just in case that adult managed to lay eggs before dying.

Dehumidifier

Fleas require 50% or higher relative humidity to live. They like 70% or higher.

Fleas can survive in a house, but they don't drink. So where do they get their water? The air.

Apparently they need plenty of humidity or their innards quickly dry up.

*Note:Air conditioners dehumidify.

Organic Ant Control

Diatomaceous Earth (DE) works the same on ants as it does fleas. It quickly dehydrates them and is a completely organic pest control method.

To use effectively for ants apply a thin stream or trail along baseboards or any other suspected ant trails.

*I only use products when I notice a problem.

Keeping food stored tightly, cleaning food from counters and floors, and regular vacuuming will help with your organic pest war.

Organic Roach Control

Guess what? DE works on roaches too! Just apply at the back of cabinets, under counters where ever you've noticed the activity.

Then put up a good defense.

Keep them out of your house.

Don't let them make it inside to feast on leftovers or congregate at your leaky pipes (and fix the leaky pipe it's wasting money).

To stop them use caulking and steel wool, to fill cracks and holes of all kinds, including spaces around pipes. Try wire screens in air vents.

Roaches are attracted to the glue used to make cardboard boxes and paper bags.

The honey-combed pattern of cardboard offers tons of tunnels that are perfect hiding spaces.

Get rid of these items if you have a roach problem.

Take up and store pet bowls over night. Keep a clean kitchen.

Organic Silver Fish Control

You know what I am going to say by now. You got it, Diatomaceousearth (DE) works for silver fish too.

Like other pests of this type they feed on starchy materials like glue, flour, book bindings, paper products, waste materials, and decaying plant and animal matter.

Apply DE along the baseboards where you've noticed the problem.

DE will take care of all the most common household pests. Organic pest control recipes take one powerful but totally safe product.
