Organic Trail Food Mix and Other Snacks for the "Trail"
Kids need snacks.
Organic trail food is a good way to feed their ever growing bodies.
Kids are active and need refueling frequently.
Children are growing strong defenses for the future and need to fund that battle ground with an organic food diet not a chemical packed food impostor diet.
Organic trail food mix is a good way to satisfy between meal hunger, they can take it "on the trail", and fuel that growth, defense, and energy.
There are organic prepared varieties available in my grocery store but you can mix up whatever little nuggets your kids like.
The more accessible the organic snacks are, the more likely the kids will eat them.
One trick that worked for me was putting the organic fruit bowl out on the counter with the cutting board and apple slicer.
My son would come home from school see it right away and have a handy, fulfilling, after school snack.
Please don't fight with your kids over food.
The most important point of my organic lifestyle is to eat an organic food diet.
The organic food benefits will be there no matter what organic food your child eats.
Raw organic food snacks, like my organic trail food mix, are to give you some ideas for added organic nutrition.
Organic Trail Food Mix
Combine your child's favorites (and maybe slip in something new)
organic raisins
organic cashews or other nuts (avoid peanuts)
organic oat rings cereal
organic chocolate chips or organic carob chips
organic dried cranberries
organic dried coconut
organic shredded squares cereal
I had boys, when they were little, they took their nutrition on the "trail" in army canteens that can strap to their waist and pour out easily! They loved it.
The canteens are made of stainless steel (won't leak toxins) and canvas making them very durable. These are a good idea for drinks on the go too!
Organic Cracker Jacks
4 qt organic popped corn (not microwavable)
1 cup organic expeller pressed oil or melted butter
1/2-3/4 cup organic molasses, syrup, or honey
1 1/2 cups organic pecans
Preheat Oven 350*
Mix oil or butter with syrup. Toss popcorn and nuts in mixture. Spread on stainless steel sheet or cake pans and bake for 15 mins stirring every 5-6 mins. Cool. Serves 6-8
Organic Cherry Tarts
16 oz organic cream cheese, softened
3/4 cup organic sugar
2 organic eggs
1 tsp organic vanilla extract
24 organic vanilla wafers
Organic cherry pie filling for topping
Preheat oven 350*
Beat Cheese and sugar until creamy. Add eggs and vanilla and beat until smooth.
Line muffin pan with organic unbleached paper cupcake liners. Place a vanilla wafer in each cup, spoon on cheese mixture.
Bake 18-20 min, let cool. Top with organic cherry pie filling. Best when refrigerated a couple of hours ahead of snack time. Serves 24!
The tarts work on the go, if your child throws the cupcake paper on the ground along the way (and they will), no worry. It will break down and cause no harm to the environment. Not that you want to condone littering but kids are kids.
Organic Nachos
7.5 oz bag of organic tortilla chips (try sesame blue corn chips)
1 cup organic cheddar cheese, grated (raw cheese from grass fed cows is unbelievably delicious)
Preheat oven 375*
Spread chips on a stainless steel baking sheet. Sprinkle with cheese and bake for approx 5 min or until cheese melts.
*Try sprinkling any of the following then sprinkle with the cheese and proceed as above.
organic refried beans
organic black olives
organic jalapeņos, sliced
organic salsa
organic taco meat
organic tomatoes, chopped
Keeping a variety of organic snacks (like organic trail food mix) handy will fuel those little bodies with the benefits of an organic diet, and they won't even suspect they are eating healthy!
