Using powerful toxic pesticides on or around your pet can compromise their health.
Organic flea control and other organic pet supplies are safe and effective.
Effective flea control is easy once you know your enemy.
There's only one pesticide, organic or otherwise, that's specific for insects and completely safe.
Diatomaceousearth(DE), a type of fossilized algae that resembles talcum powder.
The fine, sharp-edged particles penetrate the waxy coating on a flea's shell-like exoskeleton, causing the little vampires to dehydrate and die!
DE can also be used safely as a flea dust. As with any product use sparingly, saves money.
Sprinkle and work it in down to the skin.
High quality Brewers Yeast can be used as a dust as well.
Neither product will harm your pet if they lick some off.
For carpet treatment lightly sprinkle the DE on the carpet, allow to sit for 30 minutes and vacuum.
Regular vacuuming is an organic flea control too!
Light Traps
Just a little lamp (desk style works well) next to a plate of soapy water. Fleas are drawn to light.
Fleas drown easily provided you disable their mechanism to deal with water.
That's what the soap does.
*Organic flea control is so cheap and scientific!
Set the trap out at night and check it in the morning.
This is a good way to measure how you are doing with the DE treatment.
You should start to see fewer and fewer fleas in the traps.
Continue monitoring for four weeks beyond the sight of the last adult. Just in case that adult managed to lay eggs before dying.
Dehumidifier
Fleas require 50% or higher relative humidity to live. They like 70% or higher.
All life requires water.
Fleas can survive in a house, but since they don't drink, where do they get their water? The air. And they need plenty of it or their insides quickly dry up.
Note: Air conditioners dehumidify.
Bathing
As mentioned above, good old soap disables a flea's mechanism to deal with water and they drown easily.
Bathing your pet with a mild organic soap or shampoo goes a long way in cheap flea control.
Lather up in standing water. First rinse cycle, scoop the standing, soapy water over your pet with a large cup, pick off any fleas you see.
Then rinse the helpless pests down the drain using clean running water. Towel dry.
Combing
Some of the hairier breeds of dogs are difficult to use a flea comb on, but this is also, an inexpensive flea control.
If your breed can be combed successfully with a flea comb, do it outside with a bowl of soapy water nearby to dip the critters in as you get them off your pet.
