I gotta tell you something right up front about organic dog food recipes.
Dogs come from wolves (yes even poodles!) and therefore have nutritional requirements much like their ancestors.
They like and need raw meat!
It's the all important "living force" aspect of food for all of us. This fact turns many people off.
As I've said before, don't freak out. And as always, just do the things you feel comfortable adding to your life.
There are many good commercial organic dog foods on the market if you're squeamish about raw meat.
Keep in mind they are all cooked at high temps, destroying their nutritional value and the "life-force".
Try enhancing them with some of the suggestions in Recipe # 2 below. After all, organic pet food is a big step above non-organic.
Basic Raw Organic Dog Food Recipe
The ratio of meat and starch to vegetable ingredients is debatable. I've seen all kinds of opinions.
Most importantly it should contain mostly meat. Start with fifty percent meat, thirty percent starch and twenty percent vegetables.
Tweak according to you and your dogs preferences.
For the meat you may use organic lean ground beef, ground or breast fillets of organic turkey or chicken, or stew sized chunks of organic beef or lamb, as well as organic liver or kidneys.
Avoid pork.
The vegetables most recommended in raw dog food recipes include carrots, yellow squash, broccoli, zucchini, and yams, all organic of course.
For smaller dogs you may wish to grate these in order to ensure that the vegetables are easily swallowed and digested.
For larger breeds just chop them up. Don't be limited with veggies, I've used spinach, just don't use anything acidic like tomatoes or citrus.
Apple slices and carrots make good treats, raw potatoes should never be given to your pet.
The final part of any good raw dog food recipe is the starch.
Soaked (in steam distilled water) organic barley flakes and soaked organic oatmeal can make an excellent starch choice for any raw dog food recipe.
Also try cooked organic brown rice.
Avoid using any wheat based starches since in both their raw and cooked forms, these types of starches tend to plug up the digestive track of dogs (and people).
Tammi's Tidbits: You won't see wolves munching on corn or wheat stalks in the wild but they eat the stomach contents of their vegetarian prey which contains all the veggies a strong, wild wolf pack needs!
I love researching nutritional and organic pet food! It's so educational and fascinating!
Organic Raw Diet Recipe # 2
There are a couple of things you can do to enhance the above recipe.
Providing your pet with an organic dog food will go far in improving your pets health and protecting them from disease.
Start with the basic recipe mentioned above.
Adding any of the following will enhance the overall nutritional content of the meal.
*Organic plain yogurt will improve digestion- very important! Just add a teaspoon to the food or serve directly. Most pets love it.
*Cold pressed extra virgin olive oil, flaxseed oil or sunflower oil, are all good sources of beneficial omega-3,-6,-9 essential fatty acids, which enhance skin and coat and therefore quell itchy skin from the inside out. Just drizzle a little on top.
*Add in an organic raw egg - rich in amino acids and sulfur for cellular health.
*Experts are on both sides of the fence when it comes to garlic (usually mentioned for flea treatment).
I always try to stay on the safe side, so I don't feed garlic to my dog but I have used organic garlic essence as a topical treatment between the shoulder blades. Just a few drops does the trick.
*For liquid please don't use tap water. I think we've all learned what our municipal water sources can be contaminated with. Instead use only steam distilled water. It is the purest of all water.
*An added bonus for drinking water is mixing the steam distilled water with nutrient rich water left from steaming your vegetables!
A splash of organic apple cider vinegar in the water aids in healthy skin and coat.
