You may want to avoid even organic baby cereal until at least 9 months of age.
New studies have come out (good old "new studies") revealing evidence that grains are not easily digested.
They contain gluten which is very "pasty". This plugs up intestines preventing the body from absorbing important nutrients.
They have concluded that babies should be started on an orange vegetable like carrots or sweet potatoes or an easy fruit like bananas or avocados.
When you feel ready, try barley, which is low in gluten, or spelt which is easily tolerated.
Organic Oatmeal
1/4 cup of ground organic oats (not instant or quick cook), grind in blender or food processor.
3/4 cup - 1 cup steamed distilled water
Bring water to boil. Add the oatmeal powder, and simmer for 10 minutes, whisking constantly. Serve warm.
Wow! Making organic baby food is simple.
Organic Barley Cereal
1/4 cup ground organic barley, grind in blender or food processor
1 cup steam distilled water
Bring water to a boil. Add the barley and simmer for 10 minutes, whisking constantly. Serve warm.
*Barley is low in gluten.
Organic Spelt Cereal
*Sorry this one's not quick.
1/4 cup ground organic spelt, grind in blender or food processor
3/4 cup steamed distilled water
Bring water to a boil add spelt powder, cover, reduce heat and simmer for 1 1/2 hours.
Tammi's Tidbits: Spelt is over 5,000 years old and better tolerated than any other grain. The nutrients in spelt benefit blood clotting, stimulate the immune system, fight cancer, and lower cholesterol.
Rices
Organic whole grain brown jasmine, plain brown and basmati rices all work well.
Short grain rice cooks up softer than long or medium grain rice. The only problem is that it may become pasty when pureed so keep a watch over the rice when cooking and pureeing it and add liquid as needed.
*Home made organic baby cereals may be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
Note: For finicky eaters try adding organic fruit to the cereals but DO NOT give honey to babies under 2 years of age.
Pink Finger Cakes
1/4 cup organic beet puree
1/2 cup organic applesauce
Organic pancake batter
Mix the the veggie and fruit purees and add to pancake batter. Grill small, baby size pancakes!
