Definition of Organic Food

organic food label

The definition of organic food from Wikipedia:

Organic foods are produced according to certain production standards.

For crops, it means they were grown without the use of conventional pesticides, artificial fertilizers, human waste, or sewage sludge, and that they were processed without ionizing radiation or food additives.

For animals, it means they were reared without the routine use of antibiotics and without the use of growth hormones. In most countries, organic produce must not be genetically modified.

Organic food standards are legally regulated.

Currently, the United States, Europe, Japan and many other countries require producers to obtain organic certification in order to market food as organic.

In the past, organic farms were relatively small, family run farms, which is why organic food was once only available in small stores or farmers' markets.

Since the early 90's organic food has had growth rates of around 20% a year, in both developed and developing nations.

Today organic food accounts for 1-2% of food sales worldwide. Future growth is expected to range from 10-50% annually depending on the country.

Organic food products are produced using:

*Agricultural management practices that promote healthy eco- systems.

*Livestock management practices that promote healthy, humanely treated animals by providing organically grown feed, fresh air and outdoor access.

*Processing practices that protect the integrity of the organic foods.

Buying organic foods and products is an investment in the long term future of our planet and your health.

Organic food information is important for all of us to know, so we can protect ourselves, our families, and the planet from the hidden dangers of conventionally grown and packaged foods.

I hope the definition of organic food prompts you to consider the food you eat and the consequences of leaving that decision up to big business America.

The only way to make them take notice of what we Americans will allow them to do to us is with our money.

Please consider sending the message "we want safe, unaltered food" by buying organically grown foods.
